Separation of Church and Hate: A Sane Person's Guide to Taking Back the Bible from Fundamentalists, Fascists, and Flock-Fleecing Frauds

Separation of Church and Hate

If Christian Fundamentalism is supposed to be about following Jesus, then Christian Fundamentalists are not Christian.

They may worship him, but they vote and legislate against what the Bible tells us he said to do.

All too often, they do the exact opposite.

"Help the poor? No.

Care for the sick? No.

Turn the other cheek? No.

Render one's taxes? No, Sucker.

Be kind to the incarcerated? Hell no.

Welcome the stranger? Bitch, please."

(From the book, page 11.)

In Separation of Church and Hate: A Sane Person's Guide To Taking Back The Bible From Fundamentalists, Fascists, And  Flock-Fleecing Frauds, John Fugelsang plainly points this out by citing chapter and verse in the Bible, the book these people claim is the truth.

He says to not argue with them, but to let them argue with Jesus.

This is a serious book, but a joy to read.

Written with simplicity and humor. it's easy to understand and will have you laughing out loud numerous times throughout the book.

It seems strange to me now, that people can believe the Bible is literally true. Especially considering the thousands of times it has been translated and revised. We have no idea how much has been changed from the original writings.

However, the versions we have today give us plenty of evidence to clearly see it cannot be taken literally.

For example, I have a parallel Bible. and in Luke 17, 20 and 21, three of the versions quote Jesus as saying 'the Kingdom of God is within you' and the fourth (Revised Standard) changes 'within you' to 'in the midst of you.'

Not the same thing.

There are many contradictions in the Bible. But, as John Fugelsang says, a lot of these fundamentalists don't know the Bible very well, and they are hoping that you don't, either.

Here's another example, and this one is a biggie.

The first creation story. The one I never heard in church. (I touched on this in my book, SAVING KATY.)

Genesis i, verses 26 and 27. " 'And God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

"So God created man in his own image. In the image of God created he him, male and female he created he them." (King James Version.)

Then, in Genesis 2, beginning in verse 18, we get the story of woman being created from the rib of a man.

I'm not sure when I found the Genesis 1 version, I only know I have never heard a preacher mention that one.

Of course not. They want to keep women 'in their place.' The place they want us. But the fundamentalists get this from Paul's letters, not from Jesus.

I highly recommend this book!

You will be educated.amused, and along with John Fugelsang, you can ask the fundamentalist folks why you should believe them and Donald Trump when Jesus said the opposite.

From the Amazon sales page:

In the spirit of George Carlin and Christopher Hitchens, the son of a former Catholic nun and a Franciscan brother delivers a deeply irreverent and biblically correct takedown of far-right Christian hatred—a book for believers, atheists, agnostics, and anyone who’ll ever have to deal with a Christian nationalist.

For more than two centuries, the United States Constitution has given us the right to a society where church and state exist independently. But Christianity has been hijacked by far-right groups and politicians who seek to impose their narrow views on government, often to justify oppressive and unequal policies. The extremists who weaponize the Bible for earthly power aren’t actually on the side of Jesus—and historically they never have been. How do we fight back against those acting—literally—in bad faith?

Comedian and broadcaster John Fugelsang finally offers the answers. In this informative, perspective-shifting book, Fugelsang takes listeners through common fundamentalist arguments on abortion, immigration, LGBTQ rights, and more—exposing their hypocrisy and inaccuracy through scripture, common sense, and deeply inappropriate humor. It offers practical tips on how to debate your loved one, coworker, or neighbor on the issues that divide us using that Bible they claim to follow.

But Fugelsang’s message is about more than just taking down hypocrites. It’s about fighting for the love, mercy, and service that are supposed to make up the heart of Christianity. Told with Fugelsang’s trademark blend of radical honesty, comedy, and deep political and religious knowledge, Separation of Church and Hate is the book every American needs today. It’s a rallying cry for compassion and clarity for anyone of any faith who’s sick of religion being used as a cloaking device for hate.

My book, SAVING KATY, is about a young family split apart when Katy follows her mother into a non-denominational church that turns out to be more like a cult. As Katy's husband learns more about the beliefs of the church, he tells Katy he will not have their children exposed to such teachings. He vows to do whatever is necessary to see that it doesn't happen.
